Why am I posing with rusty bolts in Mississippi? ![]() These bolts are attached to something very special on a plantation, near Clarksdale, Mississippi. ![]() Hopson Plantaion I'll tell you first about the plantation...and then about the bolts. This old cotton plantation has a lot of stuff for exploring. ![]() Old Tire There's a lot of farm equipment here and there. I liked climbing on this tire. ![]() Especially since it belonged to an old tractor. ![]() Trailers There's a lot of corrugated tin around this farm. I like old trailers. ![]() Shacks And they have a lot of old sharecropper shacks. You can stay in these like a hotel, now. ![]() My Favorite Thing! Then I found this old piece of machinary. See me, sitting near some bolts? ![]() Mechanized Cotton Picker! A couple weeks ago I was nearly run over when I was posing in a Texas cotton field. (scroll down in the blogs) The cotton picker didn't look anything like this! This old machine picked cotton on the Hopson Plantation back in the 1940's. This was the first farm to use mechanical cotton pickers ever! That's pretty amazing to me. It's also pretty sad, because this machine put a lot of people out of work. ![]() Pinetop Perkins But Pinetop didn't lose his job at Hopson. He actually drove one of those old cotton pickers right on the Hopson Plantation. When the sun went down he went in the old commissary and played the piano. He became a well-known Delta Blues musician. ![]() Pinetop's Friends I didn't get to meet Pinetop. He died just over a year ago in Austin, Texas. But I got to hear some of his friends perform in the old commissary, which is now a bar. And better than that I sat on a cotton picker. Who knows, maybe Pinetop sat on that very one!

Here I am in Tennessee...on a rock...in the Smoky Mountains. ![]() I know. You can tell it's an old picture because my fur and paws don't look worn. ![]() But I did go to the Smokies last spring. You can see me on the rock. I also went a couple days ago, on my way home from Floirda. ![]() Fog!! But it was too cloudy for photos. Let's just say I'm in this picture, somewhere! ![]() Before we left Florida, I knew I just had to climb in a little Spanish moss. Bugs? ![]() Beth said it wasn't a good idea to mess with Spanish moss. But I was just curious. She said there were little red bugs in there that would get in my fur. I didn't see any. She said, "We've got Spanish moss in Texas so what's was the big deal?" I just like it, that's all. ![]() I never noticed how cool the moss looks hanging down, blowing in the breeze. Sometimes you have to go on vacation to really notice things. I've climbed a lot of things, but this was my first sponge climbing adventure! ![]() It was a little smelly, but still kind of fun. ![]() Tarpon Springs, Florida Some people think Florida is all about the beaches. But what about sponge diving? If you go to Tarpon Springs you can meet some sponge divers who spend days at a time collecting these massive sponges. 1,500 Sponges? ![]() That's about how many sponges George and Bill brought in on their boat in four days. At least that was Bill's guess. Then they get to rest on a park bench and sort them. Beth asked them if that was the best part. Bill (the diver) said no. He wouldn't do this at all if he didn't get to dive. I didn't get to dive, but I got to climb. That's a pretty good adventure. I will tell you about beaches. ![]() Some have a lot of shells. This beach on the gulf has tons. But it's actually known for shark's teeth. ![]() I didn't find even one tooth! Hunting for shark's teeth is even harder than finding me in this photo. But I'm in here. Some have mossy rocks ![]() But, I avoided the moss. It's pretty slippery and I've had a lot of close calls lately. Coquina Rock! ![]() At this beach on the Atlantic side, I can get a good grip on the rock. This beach is covered in big rounded coquina rock, which is a mixture of tiny shells and quartz. Not slippery...but very scratchy. ![]() There are lots of holes to explore. See me? ![]() And I'm climbing over the top of a rock here. ![]() I like climbing coquina. ![]() But sandy beaches are my favorite. If you look carefully at my paws you'll be able to tell this photo was from a past beach visit. My paws don't look like this since I was run over by a car. I still love sand, especially building things... ![]() But this year when I visited Daytona Beach, I didn't build a castle. Cars drive on this beach. I like adventure, but I'm not taking any chances!! |
