May 2024 This wasn't my first Mother's Day picnic. My mother and I both loved picnics, so there have been many. But this is the first I recall, that involved rain. Luckily we found a picnic shelter at Sugar Land Memorial Park. I love picnics with real picnic food. But I sure don't mind a Freddie's Burger & Milkshake picnic either! And I really loved posing with this sweet gator statue. It was a nice reminder that on Mother's Day a year ago, a gator (of about this size!) was "rescued" from the lake behind our house!

Missouri Route 66 Welcome Center Picnic in 2018 I'm currently planning a picnic for my dad's 95th birthday. This has reminded me about a tiny picnic that Don and I enjoyed, shortly after Dad's 90th birthday. After Dad's celebration weekend, Don and I headed off on a brief Rt 66 roadtrip. What hoot to discover this fun rest stop, after picking up some "picnic" foods. Don posed with the retro sign. I posed with the phones near the restrooms! Choosing a Shelter On a Tuesday in September, we had our choice of all the picnic shelters! We could have dined at one of 2 little "gas stations". Or we could have eaten our meal at Floyd's Barber Shop. It was fun seeing the "Meramec Caverns" ad, painted on the roof of one shelter. We'd already spotted many barn roofs on our drive, with that same lettering. Doug's Diner I can't remember why we chose Doug's Diner. Maybe we thought it said Don's at first. Or maybe we liked the glass block. Not sure. Placemats We had no tablecloth, but we did have laminated placemats made by my cousin. They were used at Dad's party and each mat showed Dad and the Meyer family tree. What a fun little Missouri picnic, dining with all faces of my Missouri relatives smiling up from the table.
Sweet memory. Blackfoot, Idaho Don and I stopped at the Potato Museum on our drive from Boise, Idaho to Bozeman, Montana. I posed with the potato and bought a potato to eat in the car. That was a messy idea. I made Don pull over at a rest stop. The rest stop just happened to have spotlight on the lava formations that happen to make the Idaho soil perfect for growing potatoes! I wanted to eat my potato, at a table next to the lava... but it was too sunny. I ate in the shelter as the trucks rumbled by! Don waited patiently. He doesn't love potatoes.
My first solo-potato-eating-picnic! Rock Table Luckily Don and I were carrying cups of coffee when we found this table on our walk, last June. That meant we could sit a spell and call this a coffee picnic! Salado Creek The day before, I spotted the stone tables near our hotel. It was 99 degrees and there were lots of families enjoying the creek. Salado Creek was quiet the next morning. I'm so glad we got to sit at the table and enjoy this view!
, Picnic with Cheryl Cheryl and I enjoyed a number of dining adventures when I first started blogging 10 years ago. Today, we had our first picnic adventure! We met at Pecan Park on a gorgeous day. The pecan trees had no leaves, so we had no shade. But the temps felt ideal. We sat at the picnic table and talked for 90 minutes. Feeling just a tiny bit warm, we picked up our basket and cloth and headed for shade. We sat in chairs near the bandstand and another 90 minutes passed. We sipped on water and at one point I pulled out a sandwich and nibbled. But mostly, the food was forgotten. Sometimes the talk is so much better than the food. The food in the basket was there, "if needed". Just like carrying an umbrella. But today's picnic was all about being together and catching up with a good friend. The very best kind of picnic!
Fishy Beach Picnic, in Summer 2021 This will go down as one of the oddest picnics in memory. We ended up at this beach in July 2021, thanks to our host at the Itty Bitty Inn. After checking into our Tiki-decorated motel room, our host insisted we get ourselves on down to Chuck's Seafood Market. He handed us a cutting board and knife and told us to get going. Rik told us just what to buy and said we needed take our purchase to a beach and enjoy it with a bottle of wine. We did as told. We bought oyster sticks and octopus jerky and lots of other goodies that the locals all adore. I'm pictured with a salmon fin and Don is enjoying smoked salmon stick! It was odd and wonderful!
August 2021 in Portland, Oregon It's usually too hot for picnics in August. But last August, the temps were cool and the trees were shady, in the Portland Park. We gathered with family and food. It's been a long time since I've been on a picnic with little ones! Yay for Summer Picnics with family!
Lane County Oregon Don and I packed sandwiches in the car, when we traveled last summer. We had planned to eat while driving, but then we stumbled across the Wild Cat Bridge! It's not everyday that you just happen to spot a covered bridge, from 1925! We pulled over and had our sandwiches on the bridge, above the creek!
Perfect! Fassnight Park Last June, Don and I spent a few days in Springfield, Missouri. One warm afternoon, we took sandwiches to Fassnight Park. This is a park I remember from childhood.I love a little nostalgia, in the summer. We chatted a little, with the couple at the other table. That felt odd and wonderful, after over a year of pandemic caution. Like us, the other couple were on a road trip. We swapped a few stories about the woes of pandemic travel. It was a nice and curious encounter.
Carthage, Texas Today is the first official Juneteenth National Holiday. Don and I were on the road to Missouri and feeling disappointed that we wouldn't be able to participate in any local celebrations. But before leaving the state, we pulled into Carthage, TX and ended up celebrating with the Carthage Courtesy Club. A Juneteenth fundraiser for youth.
We spent about 15 minutes chatting with the organizers and sharing thoughts on the meaning of Juneteenth. There were some serious moments. We talked about the news that reached Galveston in 1865. Such a complicated joy... But, we also laughed about the heat of the day and the fact that Don and I were getting ready to eat "goat sandwich" for the first time". What a delightful bunch to spend a bit of time with. My first Juneteenth picnic! My first goat sandwich picnic! Vaccinated Picnic! A year ago, I had a picnic with my hubby on my Pandemic Birthday. That felt odd. So many unknowns a year ago. This year I celebrated with 2 special friends, the day before my birthday. We had all recently been fully vaccinated and it felt wonderful to celebrate! For nearly 2 decades, Shari, Christy and I saw each other monthly, at book group. We had lunch together right before the pandemic lock down. On April 8, we met up in Houston's Cullen Park. We all got lost and finally found each other. Here we are toasting with champagne. Cheers to being vaccinated! 4+ Hours I will always remember how glorious it felt to sit and talk for hours. For over a year, we've communicated with texts and emails and finally we were together! We had a lot of catching up to do. I don't care that much for birthdays anymore, but this was a pretty good pre-birthday gift. Being with friends! Cheers to in-person visits once again!
Wagon Wheels Again! This is not the first time Don and I have picnicked at this rest stop. I love these fine tables, nestled between the giant wagon wheel! I don't remember the birdhouse from before, but it made me laugh when I spotted it! The thing that I'll remember about this picnic, is that we had just gotten back into the state of Texas. We spent Jan, Feb and half of March in Oregon, celebrating the arrival of our first grandchild. It took some tricky planning during the pandemic, but we felt so lucky to have been able to spend time with both our kids, spouses and Baby Charlie. It was hard saying good-bye to all and a long drive home. But, the good old warm Texas air, felt mighty good!
William Land Park in Sacramento We've always loved picnics, but the pandemic has drawn more people to parks. We had a hard time finding a parking space. We were lucky to find an open picnic table on a sunny Saturday. We thought about using this table, near this wild looking tree. Then we went for the sun. We spread out the blanket and opened the chairs on the grass! Don and I are here with our son and daughter-in-law, enjoying deli sandwiches on a beautiful spring day! We don't take if for granted that we've been able to navigate this crazy pandemic and have a few picnics with family this year. It's not easy, with family spread out in different states. It makes the food tastier and the smiles bigger!
I love picnics with family! Styrofoam Hat This is yet another picnic from Missouri in the 1970's. I'm guessing this is about 1974. Mom looks almost irritated. She did not like me snapping my camera. My younger brother Dave looks mighty sporty, balancing that lid, like a party hat. He ignored the camera.
Mom, Dave and I picnicked a lot in the 70's. We always used a Styrofoam cooler for our sodas and cold cuts and salads. Dave is blocking the festive thing, that was covered with his artwork. We always made sure to pack a ballpoint pen along with our picnic food... so Dave could add one more cartoon to the cooler! 2 Weeks Old Today The sun came out and the temps got up into the 50's! Heidi and Jamie decided it was time to get out and celebrate Baby Charlie's 2-week birthday! She slept through her first walk in the stroller. She slept through our picnic of smoked salmon, cheese and apples. Charlotte also slept through her little photo session with Mommy and Daddy. One More Pic Then Grammaloon insisted on getting a photo of the 3 generations! Then it was time to put masks back on and head to the car. Little Charlie was a perfect picnic baby! But I have a feeling all Pandemic Babies are going to be a little extra special and "good"! Their parents have worked extra hard to make their world safe and they're going to enjoy it!
Sunday in the Park When I ran across these images on old slides, memories came flooding back to me. My family had just moved from Florida to Michigan. On one of the first weekends after moving, we packed up for a day of picnicking. I'm so glad Mom took these photos, because this is what I remember about family picnics. We brought more than food! Dad and Me We brought games and books, drawing pads and frisbees. We lugged lawn chairs and coolers, blankets and table cloths. We brought our entertainment for the day. I'm guessing Dad was about 45 in this pic. I was 16. We look very serious about our Yahtzee game.
I love seeing this and being reminded that this past October, I picnicked with my dad in Missouri. He was 92 and I was 63, but just like our picnic of many years ago... we lugged along much more than food! Burger King What do I remember about this lovely picnic? The fast food burger tasted fabulous! I also remember it was 100 degrees, but we weren't going to eat inside because we were cautious pandemic travelers! We were at the very end of our long TX - OR- TX road trip and had eaten about 5,000 sandwiches. Our Burger King feast was heavenly!
With the Kids In August, Don and I drove out west for a safe reunion with our kids. This picnic was with our son and daughter in law... before meeting up with our daughter and son in law, in Oregon. What a treat! After 5 months of hunkering down, we got to spend time with our kids. All 6 of us had agreed on quarantine rules ahead of time, so we could feel safe together. I remember the fog lifting as we sat at this table. The view got prettier. Once we got in the car, the scenery continued to improve! Redwood trees and dramatic coastline! I want to go back to August!
New Mexico In August, we traveled from TX to OR to be with our kids. We had a lot of picnics on the way, to avoid contact with others. Our first picnic on the road trip was at a rest stop in New Mexico. We parked, grabbed food and walked to the table in our masks. I sprayed the table with disinfectant and laid down the blanket. We put the camera on a timer and documented our 2020 picnic. The masks came off and the peanut butter and jelly was delicious!
Gas Station Picnic in New Mexico Last summer, Don and I traveled safely to see our kids. We packed our own food and sanitized picnic tables in rest stops. But a lot of rest stops were closed down. This was one of our car picnics. It was at a gas station, with lots of Native American decor. This is pretty disgusting. Not all picnics are lovely and healthy. But, I was hungry and I remember it tasted pretty darn good.

Mom's Picnic List
In honor of my mother on the first Mother's Day since she has passed, I dedicate a new list... Mom's Picnic List!
Mom loved picnics and she raised her kids to appreciate the simple pleasures of food, family and friends in the great out of doors. My Plan I will spend a year reflecting on as many past picnics as I can remember. But, I'll also appreciate the here and now by creating new picnic experiences. My goal is to share at least 60 picnic memories, since that's how many years Mom was a mom! Let the picnics begin! Archives
