Lunch in Lebanon... Missouri
Grain Bin Hotel
Don and I were in Phillipsburg, MO last April. This was our hotel.
It was fun, but dining options were slim on a Monday.
Phillipsburg General Store
This seemed to pretty much be the downtown area of Phillpsburg.
It was closed. Who knows how long it's been since you could buy a candy bar at the General store?
Old Route 66
Our Grain Bin was located on part of the old Route 66, where a motel and gas station once sat.
I wish we'd found an old Rt 66 diner. We did spot the Underpass Cafe, on the old Mother Road. But it closed down years ago.
Fried Chicken and Homemade Pie?
We also spotted this sign!
The arrow was pointing, but we saw nothing. Oh how I wish!
In the town of Lebanon, we found this classic market.
They served food! But not on Mondays.
It was 1:30 when we arrived at Clifton's West Side Cafe, in Lebanon.
It wasn't iconic, but it was open. Best of all they welcomed us! It was approaching closing time and small town cafes don't often appreciate out-of-towners, arriving last minute.
Eggs and Chickens!
We were ushered to a corner with a nice display of eggs and chickens.
Don and I ordered fast. He got breakfast and I ordered just a cup of chicken and noodle soup, which came with a plastic basket of saltines. Those noodles were so tasty and fat, they should have been called dumplings!
Brooms and Vacuums
While we ate, I counted 6 different employees with brooms and rags and carpet sweepers. The diner was buzzing with clean up activity.
Ordinarily that annoys me to feel rushed. But we had no need to linger and the staff was downright entertaining. One worker even brought a baby by our table so we could get a peek!
Lunch accomplished. We decided it wasn't too early to come up with a dinner plan. We found no good ideas.
However The World's Largest Gift Store was across the highway from our Grain Bin.
A candy factory was housed in another building.
We checked out the fudge and candied popcorn, then left with a very small purchase.
It was cozy in our bin that evening. Don made cocktails.
The green apple and creamsicle candy sticks added a curious flavor (and color) to our martinis!
We enjoyed drinks and grabbed some dinner in our travel cooler. Cheese, crackers, nuts and fruit. A nice end to our very tiny dining adventure day!

On July 4th 2011, I set a goal to try 50 culturally diverse restaurants in one year!
