Costa Rican in Houston? ![]() Once again, the internet got my hopes up about a restaurant and then let me down by announcing the restaurant has closed. As far as I know, the last Costa Rican restaurant in Houston is now gone. But luckily our friends the Bennetts offered to treat us to a Costa Rican treat in their home. Here is Cheryl, sizzling up some plantains, before pounding them into discs. Gallo Pinto! ![]() Gallo Pinto is a traditional Costa Rican dish made with mostly rice and beans. I love the name! Spotted Rooster! Some of the other ingredients are cilantro, onions...and the special LIZANO salsa which has to be ordered. The Chef! Here is Bob, the Gallo Pinto chef! He learned to make this while living with a family for two months in Costa Rica. He was quite the pro with his iron skillet! ![]() Cheryl does the final prep on the plantains. ![]() And then, one at a time, we are served! A perfect fried egg, served on top of a flavorful mixture of rice, beans and cilantro! Along with the plantains and fresh fruit, we had a heavenly Costa Rican feast! POINTS?? I guess I can't do my usual rating system since we weren't in a restaurant. I can't comment on fellow diners or authentic restaurant decor or music. But I can say, I did eat a delicious Costa Rican dish, prepared by some very friendly people! :) I'll give Costa Rica a check on the Diverse Dining List!!

The Dining Blog
This is a blog about Dining Adventures. Sometimes, I talk about food. Below, you can read how this started. On July 4th 2011, I set a goal to try 50 culturally diverse restaurants in one year! (I knew that was possible, living in the Houston area) I spent the year pulling in friends and family to join me, on some unusual dining adventures. I met some curious people, tried some scary foods and explored places and cultures I never would have otherwise. Even though I met my goal, I learned too much to end my adventures in dining. I have continued blogging about memorable dining adventures of all kinds, near and far... and all the discoveries and funny things I've learned along the way! Locations and types of dining adventures, are listed further down. Archives
